DOMINICA
Feb. 23-March 1, 2008
Dominica is the “nature island” of the Caribbean primarily because its mountainous terrain and lack of sandy beaches has prevented it from being developed with large resorts or decimated by large-scale agriculture. Virgin rainforest covers most of this sparsely populated island. Rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls abound, fed by the islands high annual rainfall. Its volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity above and below sea level. Bring your hiking shoes as you will want explore above water as well as below. Castle Comfort Lodge is a small 15-room dive resort within walking distance of the islands largest town of Roseau. All rooms have private baths, ceiling fans, AC, and Cable TV. There is also a hot tub and pool. They operate 5 boats from their own dock and dive gear is available for rent. All of the dives will be scheduled in the morning so that afternoons will be free for land excursions on this beautiful island.

The land tour: Drive through the Botanical Gardens, through the Roseau Valley to the tiny village of Laudat; gorgeous mountain ranges, cocoa plantation ruins, local roadside orchids growing wild, including brilliantly colored bromeliads, giant size ferns, and greenery in abundance to both the Freshwater Lake and Titou Gorge. Visitors take a short hike to the icy cold river, where warm water streams mingle with the gushing fresh river water, leaving no evidence of its warmth. Swim up the river through a huge water dugout crevice into a mountain to inhale the cool air gushes created by the pounding waterfall. [Firm walking shoes, bathing suit and a desire for adventure are required!]
The Whale and Dolphin Tour: Dominica is blessed with an abundance of both resident and visiting cetaceans – pods of Spinner and Spotted Dolphins, Pilot Whales, Sperms Whales, False Orcas and at least a dozen of other species. Dominica is considered one of the best areas in the Caribbean for Whale and Dolphin encounters.
